Switch Instagram to a Professional Account and Link a Facebook Page

Instagram does not let any outside tool read comments on a personal account. The only official way is Meta's Graph API, which works for professional accounts (Business or Creator) and only on that account's own posts. Switching is free, takes a minute, and does not change who can see your posts.

Many tools, ours included, reach Instagram through Meta's Facebook login, which also needs the Instagram account linked to a Facebook Page. This guide covers both, and what to check if the connection does not show your account.

Step 1 — Switch to a professional account

  • In the Instagram app, go to your profile and tap the menu (☰).
  • Open "Account type and tools" (in some versions: Settings → Account).
  • Tap "Switch to professional account".
  • Choose a category and then Creator (people, creators) or Business (shops, brands). Either works for reading comments.
  • Finish the steps. You can switch back to personal at any time.

Business or Creator — which should I pick?

Both are free and both let tools read your comments. Creator suits individuals and influencers (it has a creator-focused inbox and earnings tools); Business suits shops and brands (contact buttons, shopping). For a giveaway it makes no difference.

One thing does change: a professional account cannot be private. If your account must stay private, run the giveaway from a separate public account.

Step 2 — Link Instagram to a Facebook Page

  • You need a Facebook Page (not a personal profile). If you do not have one, create it from Facebook → Pages → Create — a Page can be minimal.
  • From Instagram: profile → Edit profile → Page (under Public business information) → Connect or create, then choose your Page. From Facebook instead: open the Page → Settings → Linked accounts → Instagram → Connect.
  • Confirm the Instagram account shows as linked to the Page in Meta Business Suite or the Page's Linked accounts.

Step 3 — Connect it to the giveaway tool

  • Choose "Connect Instagram" and log in on Meta's own screen — the tool never sees your password.
  • When Meta asks which Pages and Instagram accounts to share, tick the Page AND the Instagram account linked to it. Unticked accounts are invisible to the tool.
  • Approve the permissions (reading comments on your posts). You can remove access any time from Facebook → Settings → Business integrations, or Instagram → Settings → Apps and websites.

If your account does not appear

  • The account is still personal — switch it to professional first.
  • It is not linked to a Facebook Page, or linked to a Page you did not tick when connecting. Reconnect and tick it.
  • You logged in with a Facebook account that does not manage that Page.
  • You are trying to read a post from someone else's account. Instagram only allows reading comments on your own posts.

More questions, answered

Does switching to a professional account cost anything?

No. Business and Creator accounts are free, and you can switch back to a personal account at any time.

Can a giveaway tool read comments on a personal Instagram account?

Not through Instagram's official API — it only serves professional accounts. Tools that claim otherwise either scrape (against Instagram's terms) or ask for your password, which you should never give.

Is it safe to connect Instagram to a giveaway tool?

Through Meta's official login, yes: the tool never sees your password, only gets the permissions you approve, and you can remove its access at any time from your Facebook or Instagram settings.
